AGQ CDT research project - The impact of road works on traffic

Over the summer of 2026 the Scottish Road Works Commissioner hosted two AGQ CDT PhD student placements to work on the challenge to investigate the conflict checking and impact scale of roadworks on the Scottish Roadworks Register, focusing on two questions:

  • Is there a predictive relationship between traffic conditions and roadworks that could serves as a measure of roadworks impact?
  • Is there a quantitative way of capturing traffic sensitivity in order to identify works that are most likely to cause significant disruption?

The following reports produced by the students lays out their findings and includes recommendations on how the information currently gathered could be improved upon.

The first report provides a summary of the work undertaken and the findings. The second goes into detail on the experiments carried out and the recommendations made.

The Commissioner would like to thank the students and the AGQ CDT staff involved in this project for their work in producing these reports.
