TOUGH Training Demo

The Scottish Road Works Commissioner, Kevin Hamilton, visited North Lanarkshire Council and their contractor, Hochtief, to see a demonstration of a new virtual reality training system for road workers.

This system has been developed to allow staff to undertake vocational road works training in a virtual environment. Evidence suggests that virtual reality training can be more effective than conventional training methods, whilst also having additional benefits such as reduced exposure to risk and the potential for development of task and job specific training modules.

The Commissioner, Kevin Hamilton, said:

“It is great to see organisations investing in innovative technologies that aim to make road works safer for both road workers and road users. There is great potential for these systems to significantly improve the training of workers and with further development this approach could become an integral part of training within the sector.”
