The Scottish Road Works Commissioner's Compliance Officers, Jana Berger and Rob Fraser were recently awarded specialist road works vocational qualifications.
In October 2024, they completed City and Guilds units on Health and Safety and road works Inspections. The Commissioner worked closely with the training provider to tailor the course to ensure that Scottish specific legislation was used throughout.
In December 2024, the officers achieved the industry standard Street Works Qualification Register Supervisor qualification.
The Commissioner, Kevin Hamilton, said:
“I am delighted that Jana and Rob have achieved these specialist qualifications. They put a great deal of effort into successfully completing the courses and that effort has paid off.
Additionally, the work we put in with the training provider to tailor the road works inspection course to the Scottish market will potentially be very useful to local authorities looking to upskill their own staff.”
Section 126 of the New Roads and Street Works Act requires that works carried out by Statutory Undertakers (public utilities) are supervised by someone holding a ‘prescribed qualification’. This qualification is the Street Works Qualification Register Supervisor card.
A similar requirement for Roads Authorities is prescribed in Section 61B of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
